More Than a Drop-Off Zone

Reclaiming the school gates as a place of ministry and connection.

For many parents, the school run is a frantic blur of lost PE kits and hurried goodbyes. But what if we viewed those few minutes at the school gates as a strategic opportunity? Your child’s school is the heart of your local community, and as a parent, you have unique access to the families and faculty who shape it.

Engaging with your child’s school doesn’t necessarily mean joining every committee (though that helps!), but it does mean being intentional.

  1. Be the “First Responder”: When a school event needs volunteers or a teacher asks for extra supplies, be the first to step up. Radical generosity is a hallmark of the Gospel.
  2. Listen to the Needs: Teachers are often overworked and under-appreciated. A simple, handwritten note of encouragement can sustain a teacher for an entire term.
  3. Bridge the Gap: If your church is running a holiday club or a youth event, your relationships at the school gate are the bridge that helps local families find a welcoming community.
